Beauty Plus Makeup Products Recalled After Testing Positive for Asbestos

Several makeup products produced by Beauty Plus have been recalled by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) after testing positive for asbestos. The products in question include a matte blush, bronzer, beauty palette and a shimmer bronzer.

The FDA has advised consumers to stop using the makeup products immediately.

The products in question include:

  • City Color Collection Matte Blush in Fuchsia, Lot No. 1605020/PD-840
  • City Color Cosmetics Timeless Beauty Palette, Lot No. 1510068/PD-C864R
  • City Color Bronzer in Sunset, Lot No. 160634/PD-P712M
  • City Color Shimmer Bronzer in Caramel, Lot No. 1612112/PD-840

The asbestos was discovered as part of the FDA’s ongoing testing of beauty products. Consumers who own these products are advised to stop using them immediately and report any adverse effects to FDA’s MedWatch Adverse Reporting Program.

This isn’t the first time Beauty Plus products have been recalled due to asbestos.

In May, the FDA found asbestos in the company’s Contour Effects Palette 2. Asbestos was also discovered in Claire’s JoJo Siwa Makeup Set.

The cosmetics industry in the U.S. is largely unregulated. The Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act, which regulates cosmetics in the U.S., hasn’t changed since it was enacted in 1938. Europe has banned 1,300 chemicals from cosmetic products sold there, while the U.S. only prohibits 11.

Efforts to pass updated legislation in 2011 and 2018 failed.

Cosmetics manufacturers do not have to register with the FDA, nor do they have to report their ingredients or adverse events.

A lack of regulation means that manufacturers of cosmetics can put almost anything into their products, including compounds linked to increased cancer risk, such as lead, coal tar and formaldehyde.

Senator Debbie Dingell has sponsored legislation that addresses the asbestos issue. The legislation would require products marketed to kids to carry a warning, or to be asbestos-free and deemed safe.
