More Attention Is Being Paid to Discrimination Than Ever

The civil rights movement is strong in the United States right now. With many people spending more time away from the office in the wake of the pandemic, there is a unique opportunity for everyone to fight for their rights. It is important for everyone to note some of the discrimination that has taken place throughout the country.

Recently, there was a lawsuit filed by Winer, Burritt, & Scott, LLP; a practice based on LA that specializes in civil rights abuses. A suit has been brought against Ivie McNeill Wyatt Purcell & Diggs,  considered the nation’s largest Black-owned law firm specializing in civil rights abuses alleging harassment. The allegations include repeated sexual advances throughout the workplace that escalated on a work trip that took place outside of the country. The supervisor, Rodney Diggs is even accused of barging into the plaintiff’s hotel room while intoxicated and requesting oral sex while exposing himself to the plaintiff. The defendant eventually fell to the floor and passed out, but not before indicating that he was involved in another relationship with a female in the office. This suggests that this type of conduct might be widespread.

The plaintiff, Chaena Dade,  immediately reported the advance and misconduct to a manager, telling the manager that she was scared, unable to focus, and did not want to exit her hotel room. Sadly, the firm allegedly never took appropriate action and even promoted the defendant. Thus, the plaintiff brought a lawsuit against the firm, seeking damages related to the misconduct and harassment.

This goes to show that even though the current climate and civil rights movement encourages people to come forward, speak out, and share their stories, there is still a long way to go. It is important for everyone to take steps to defend their rights and make their stories known. In the wake of numerous police shootings including those involving George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery, there are more eyes on these stories than ever before. As a result, this presents a unique opportunity for incredible social change in this country. Everyone should feel invited to share their story because they will be welcomed with open arms by everyone else who is participating in this movement.

Right now, there are still people out there who feel like they cannot speak out. They are afraid to name their accusers. The good news is that they do not have to do this alone. There are always trained professionals who are willing to walk with these individuals, arm in arm, as they share their stories and fight for justice. This movement is going to lead to lasting change in this country.
